" You can't go back and change the beginning but you can start where you are and change the ending." C.S. Lewis
In my short tenure as a personal trainer and nutrition coach, I have had to do my fair share of listening and collecting data from my clients about their wellness journey. So often I start with the past and move forward to the current moment in time. What worked, what didn't, what they liked, what they hated and what they are not willing to ever do again.
Just recently, I was reflecting on my coaching and evaluating why I have had some very successful clients and some who have not had positive change. When looking back I noticed that clients who were still trying to undo their past had less success then those who accepted their journey and was willing to move forward and change their ending.
This is not an easy thing to do...letting go of your past. It is so easy to get stuck in regret.... "I wish I didn't do that" or "I wish I could go back in time" So often I had heard the story of blame of their past mistakes. I am here where I am because of A,B, or C.
In passing, I happened upon the quote by C.S. Lewis which has sparked this reflection. Since reading this I am plan on changing my coaching techniques just a bit. I want my clients to speak of their past but not perseverate on it. I want them to share but then let go. Instead of using the past as blame, look at it as part of the journey to help them move forward and find the success everyone deserves.
I am also going to look within regarding how I work with my clients. When I have a client experience failure I automatically turn within and blame myself...what did I miss, what did I do wrong. I need to instead evaluate the failure and from there accept and move on. I need to apply these moments to new techniques to help us all create a new and better ending.
I am excited to see the change in my coaching and how it will help those who are beginning the journey to wellness.
