​Hypothyroidism (AKA…..Hashimoto’s Disease)

Before understanding what can go wrong with this tiny little organ, let’s first understand where it is.  Your thyroid lies in the front of your neck and looks like a little butterfly that is 2 inches long.  This small gland impacts nearly all of our organs.  It is the major gland in the endocrine system and regulates carbohydrate and fat metabolism, cholesterol, heart and nervous system, body temp, brain development, menstrual cycle and so much more.  So, in other words when your thyroid is not functioning, either are you. 

In working with several clients with hypothyroidism and recently I have learned that there is a link between gluten sensitivity and thyroid disease.  The molecular structure of the gluten resembles the thyroid gland.  Once ingested, the gluten reaches your gut and then your blood stream.  Your immune system then attacks your thyroid.  Unfortunately, eating just one piece of bread, a plate of pasta or slice of pizza, can wreak havoc for up to six months on your thyroid which is already compromised.  So, there is no 80/20 rule.  You need to get off gluten!






Dr. Mark Higman, MD. Suggests 7 life changes that can kick start your metabolism and start reversing the negative effects of you condition.

1.  Treat all the underlying symptoms and causes of your Thyroid disease.  For examples, food allergies, gluten intolerance, and vitamin deficiencies.
 2.  Get your nutrition in check
3.  Decrease stress and increase coping strategies
4.  Exercise.
5.  Begin taking supplements like vitamin D, Zinc, and omega-3.
6.  Begin heat therapy, sweating helps decrease toxins
7.  Use thyroid medication as directed.
