We are in the go-go-go state of mind. Meal replacement bars and drink companies have cornered the market on the quick and easy meal on the go. Get all your recommended vitamin and minerals, satisfy your hunger, and lose weight while drinking your calories. HA!
Most bars and MRS are filled with sugar, sugar substitutes, and highly processed foods. As we get into the game of replacing whole foods with a shake we stop learning on how to budget calories, how to eat right, and prepare a meal for ourselves. Mindful eating stops as we no longer need to recognize patterns and behaviors around food.
Things to watch for in MRS are that vitamins and minerals are actually synthetic, this making digestion a real chore. They contain a tremendous amount of sugar. A small bottle of Ensure Plus contain 22 grams of sugar, Boost-23grams, Odwalla-33grams, Slimfast-18grams, and Skakeology-9grams. Mind you, the recommended daily allowance of sugar is 30 grams per day.
They also contain artificial ingredients like shelf-life stabilizers and flavor enhancers, better known at artificial sweeteners. They are very often low in fiber and in protein. What protein is does have comes from dairy or highly processed powders.
Lastly, MRS when used for weigh loss, the actual weigh loss is done so unhealthily and not lasting. People feel deprived and become socially isolate because they have not learned coping strategies to control cravings in social situations.
Now protein shakes and smoothies made from plant-based powers are not what this is about. I am discussing companies to pray on the uneducated to make false promises of quick and easy weight loss without having to do anything but drink their magic potion. My advice like all thing when tring something new ask the advice of your doctor, nutrition coach, or trainer to help guide you in the right direction.
