Since 1996 we have grown from 15 million subscribers to in 2016, 395.9 million users. 87% of teen 14-18 have smartphones, while 92% of 19-34 own some sort of device. 75% of children under 10 have access to some sort of device whether that means smart phone, tablet or game system. They spend a minimum of 15 minutes a day behind the screen. Shockingly, 38% of children under the age of 2 have had experience using their guardian’s device. How does this impact our health? Sleep and immunity issues are directly related to over usage. Studies show that too much time behind the screen impact our circadian clock. It also alters melatonin production and brain activity during sleep. Excessive use of cellphones is linked to headaches and fatigue, wearing us down. Thus leaving us more susceptible to illness. Child development is also in question with over usage. Currently there are links to interrupted sleep patterns, dizziness, fatigue, headaches, attention and behavioral concerns due to the electromagnetic radiation. Some studies show decreased memory and other dangerous activities. For example, texting and driving, visiting unsafe sites and obesity from lack of movement and poor habits. What can we do?
